In this third advent week, we wait as the Light grows stronger through the darkness. This week we are lighting a third Advent candle until all 5 are lit.
The light is growing weekly as we approach Christmas Day when we will celebrate the arrival of Jesus; Emmanuel (God with us), A Light in the Darkness.
Faced with the troubles and the suffering of the world, its pain and its hurt, it is not always easy to be glad. But the prophet Zephaniah tells us to, “Rejoice and exult with all your heart” because God is always with us.
As we light the third candle we say, ”We light this candle of JOY as a reminder of the light that shines in the darkness, and as a sign of our commitment to share in the world’s vulnerability and to rejoice in the promise of God’s abiding presence.

A prayer adapted from the Church of Scotland weekly worship page.
Creator God,
thank You that the light shines in the darkness and the darkness will not overcome it.
Thank You for the beauty of creation, for Your handiwork on display each day.
Thank You for the gift of Jesus and the joy of knowing Him – Emmanuel, God with us!
Thank You that You know us, You love us and You care about each of us.
You care about the things we care about because You care for us.
You alone are worthy of all our praise this day and every day.
Faithful God,
as we continue this Advent journey,
teach us to turn to You in times of joy and pleasure,
as well as when faced with fear and sorrow.
Help us to put our differences behind us
and to unite behind the great commission of Jesus to make disciples of all nations and all people.
Amen
