Thursday Reflection for Holy Week

Thursday (Matthew ch 26 vs 17 – 75)

You have spread a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

Today, the disciples prepare for a passover meal together, in the evening, away from the crowds.

Jesus knows that his hour has come, that he must leave the world and go to the Father.

He has always loved his own who are in the world, and now he is to show the full extent of his love.

It is Jesus who takes the part of a servant and washes his disciples feet and some protest.

A master does not wash the feet of others!

But this is the way the world is transformed ….

by loving the unlovely,

by dying for the lifeless,

by forgiving those, whose hearts are too stubborn

to see what they are or know who he is.

They break bread together, they drink the cup of wine together,

they go out into the night to a quiet place so Jesus can pray.

Then the crowd come to arrest Jesus and take him away for trial.
