Wednesday Reflection
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the flowers gone?
The girls have picked them every one.
When will you ever learn?
When will you ever learn?
Pete Seeger
In just over two months’ time, Embrace the Middle East will no longer be our chosen charity. For almost four years we have had the privilege of supporting Embrace and giving them much-needed funds for the vital work they do. Current events in the Middle East have reminded us (if we need reminding) of the enormous challenge charities like Embrace face as they seek to help and heal in the most difficult and dangerous of circumstances. We need Embrace.
And we also need Pete Seeger and songwriters like him to pen songs of protest and to remind us (if we need reminding) of the injustices in our world and the futility of war. It is an important and necessary human right to protest. But, arguably, it is more important to embrace. If we protest we take a side, if we embrace we don’t. Embrace the Middle East do what’s written on the tin. So, as we begin to say farewell to Embrace, we can still support them as individuals through our gifts and prayers. I am sure Pete Seeger would want us to protest with a clenched fist, but embrace with an open arm.
