Wednesday Reflection for 11th June

Magdalen Chapel visit

Last week I was part of a group visiting the Magdalen Chapel in the Cowgate. It was very interesting place, built in 1542 not long before the Protestant Reformation in 1560.

It has been used by various groups over the centuries. The Cowgate, over the years as the New Town was built, became a very poor area, with slums, poverty and disease and the Chapel, in 1858 to 1952, became part of the Edinburgh Medical Mission presence in the Cowgate.  In the 1992 a restoration of the Chapel was started.

As we walked round after the talk about the history and the features of the Chapel, we noticed the pulpit fall.

Worship is the submission of all our nature to God,

It is the quickening of conscience by His Holiness,

The nourishment of the mind with His Truth,

The purifying of the imagination by His Beauty,

The opening of the heart to His Love,

The surrender of the Will to His Purpose.

A quote from Archbishop William Temple.
