Wednesday Reflection
Last year, when the new Inverleith St. Serf’s Church website was being developed and its Mission Statement was revisited, one of the Mission and Discipleship Team, James Robertson wrote the poem below to focus our thoughts.
Through our understanding of Christ’s own mission,
we seek to listen, learn and love.
Our church is a place of listening.
We invite all who question,
Who are uncertain,
Who doubt and who challenge.
As a congregation we seek to converse
Rather than convert.
Our church is a place of learning.
The sharing of personal lived experiences,
Learning from mistakes,
Embracing mystery.
As a Christian community we seek to respectfully debate
Rather than conveniently deny.
Our church is a place of loving.
A sense of unconditional goodwill
Towards those whose lives have taken different paths,
Who are perhaps not aware of the grace of God.
As temporary custodians of a fragile world
We seek not to turn a blind eye to what dismays us
But to present an open hand to what disturbs us
