Nearly 40 people took part in the Seder Supper on Maundy Thursday.
The Rev Dororthy U Anderson took us through the service which combined elements of the Jewish Passover rite and our own Holy Communion. James Peat acted as ‘Father’ and Margaret Colquhoun as ‘Mother’.
Each person had four small glass of red grape juice which were to be drunk at designated parts of the service. Before us were matzas (unleavened flatbread), bitter herbs, vegetables (including horse radish) and a special herb dish designed to look like the mud from which the Israelites built bricks for the Egyptians – all of which were tasted at specific moments..
We were reminded of the Israelites’ flight from Egypt before enjoying a communal meal of quiche, cheese, salads and fruit. The service ended with a celebration of Holy Communion.
For most of those present this was a new and quite overwhelming – if also moving – experience.
