Reflection for the Second week in Advent – on the way.

In this advent posting we use words from our Sunday service, verses from our Advent hymn and the benediction.

This was also the Sunday when we held a service of quiet reflection in the midst of the busy-ness of this time of year; a time especially for those who grieve for the loss of a loved one whether recent or longer ago but also a time to step back and listen for the voice of God. So some of the words we said together in that service are just before the benediction.

Our journey to Bethlehem continues. There is still a long way to go but the goal is nearer.

Call to Worship.

Jesus, our Prince of Peace, we pray that every time a carol is sung,

a Christmas greeting spoken, a nativity play performed,

that your name be honoured and glorified

and that hard hearts be melted to receive you afresh. Amen

Lighting of the second Advent Candle

In this second week of Advent, as the waiting and expectation heighten, deepen our desire for peace.

Like the wise called to journey in those early dawning days, may we seek, strive, search for peace.

Like the prophets old and new, may we cry out for its coming. We light a candle for peace. May it light the way.

ADVENT HYMN to the Tune “The road and the miles to Dundee” (697 in CH4)

1. The candle that burns is our hope in Christ Jesus;

    It spreads in the darkness, and glows in our hearts;

   Whenever our hope seems to fade and to falter

   Remember this candle, and hope in our Lord.

2. The candle that burns is our peace in Christ Jesus;

    It spreads round the world and envelops us all;

   Whenever our peace is disturbed by our sadness

   Remember this candle, and peace will embrace.

Remembering those who have gone before us on the journey.

In the rising of the sun and its going down, we remember them.

In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.

In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them.

In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.

In the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them.

In the beginning of the year, and now, when it is ending, we remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them.

When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them.

When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them.

As long as we live, they too shall live, for as we remember them, they are now a part of us.

Benediction

May the One who yearns for peace and justice,

the One who proclaims the coming Kingdom,

and the One who calls us to action,

bless you with a hunger and thirst for righteousness,

that you may be ready when Christ comes again.
