Wednesday Reflection for 30th October

This is a reflection written 2 years ago by James Robertson. It bears re-reading!

Wednesday Reflection

What does autumn mean to you? Or, to be more specific, what does autumn 2022 mean to you? At a time of significant turbulence – politically, environmentally, and not least within our own presbytery – how do we reflect on the season of autumn which heralds darker and colder days? Does it heighten our sense of negativity and reinforce the mantra of “Aye, the nights are fair drawin’ in”? Or does it make us stop to admire and appreciate the beauty of autumn; letting go and just being in the moment. The tree in the photograph below is one which I walk by most days. It is firmly rooted yet always reaching out. Its branches are eye-catching whether bare or laden with leaves. At this time of year, the leaves change – and fall – every day. Yet there is something HOPE-FULL about trees. New leaves will come; winter will not last. Spring will once again be a time of renewal. But in the meantime, let’s embrace the colours and aromas of autumn. And remember, too, that although the nights may indeed be drawin’ in, they will start to draw oot again in a couple of months.

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31
