Wednesday Reflection
“I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.”
This is part of the last verse of our closing hymn that we sang on Sunday (Hymn 251 from CH4 – I, the Lord of sea and sky written by Daniel L. Shutte).
Again, a favourite hymn, good to sing and with a splendid accompaniment so an uplifting end to the service as we went out into the world after the blessing.
But, again the words stood out with deeper meaning.
Even words we are familiar with can cause us to pause, think and understand more about our lives and our faith.
We considered the parable from Luke 14 vs 7-14 about selecting seats of honour at a feast and, rather than how we would decide who gets the places of honour, what is important to God.
And also the parable of who should be invited to the feast – not those who are like us and can give an invitation to their feast in return but rather those who cannot return the favour with a responding invitation.
“I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide till their hearts are satisfied.”
Then the final line of the verse:-
“I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send?”
The chorus responds,
Here I am, Lord.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
Then,on Monday morning, at the Pram Service for under 3’s we were reading the bible story about talents/skills and how we should think about what our skills are and that we should be using them for others instead of hiding them.
This was reinforced by the story of Elmer the patchwork elephant who was different from the others but his skill was making the other elephants happy.
We made trees with heart stickers, one for each skill we had thought of and coloured in pictures of Elmer.
Our prayer was this,
Dear Father, help us to find out what our talents are. We know that we are all special and that we have talents and skills that can be used to help others. Show us how to use them for the good of our community. Amen
Altogether, a thought provoking weekend!
